In our stressed, modern lives, most of us breathe shallowly into our chests or upper shoulders. This sends a constant signal of "mild panic" to our bodies.
The 360-Degree Breath
In Pilates, we focus on Lateral Thoracic Breathing. Imagine your ribcage is an umbrella opening in all directions. As you inhale, send the air into the sides and back of your ribs, not just the front.
Why it Matters
This type of breathing engages the intercostal muscles and allows for better oxygen exchange. More importantly, it helps stabilize the spine during movement. Try it now: place your hands on your lower ribs. Can you breathe into them?
